A wise priest once told us that the Presider's chair is for when the priest is not there. It symbolizes the priest in Persona Christi, the person of Christ, as well as the authority of the local bishop, so it needs to stand out from the rest of the church seating and tie in with the altar and ambo in materials, design and color. The Presider's chair is not about the priest and it is not a throne; it is a symbol of Jesus and his apostolic Church.

From a practical standpoint, we make our sanctuary chairs wider and a bit lower than your average dining room chair to allow for ease of movement while wearing vestments.
